On World Aids Day, i.e. 1 December, 2016 an awareness programme was conducted by Akhil Bhartiya Jan Kalyan Vikas Samiti which included 30 asha workers who were apprised on HIV AIDS by Dr. Ram Singh, Medical Officer, Primary Health Centre, Kaundhiara, Allahabad. The programme also observed the presence of Health Education Officer from Primary Health Centre, Kaundhiara, Allahabad, Smt. Geeta Singh along with the Secretary of Akhil Bhartiya Jan Kalyan Vikas Samiti, Mr. Krishna Kumar Pandey, other social workers and samiti members.
The main objective of the NGO for including asha workers in the programme was, according to the government rule a single asha worker is accountable for 1000 people and so in making 30 asha workers aware around 30,000 people are made aware of this misapprehended disease (HIV/AIDS).
Dr. Ram Singh addressed the asha workers introducing them about HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and the AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) disease adding that, “To exclude and discriminate with an AIDS patient is not rectified at all”. On further conversing with the asha workers he says, if asha being educated and literate will exclude the AIDS patient then the villagers and relatives of concerned person will also discriminate with him/her. The excluded patient will lose his will and enthusiasm of living a healthy and better life.
An AIDS patient is not as much affected by the disease as much he is affected by the exclusion which disrupts his social and mental health. Rather than discriminating with the patient, he should be encouraged to undergo tests and proper medications and should also be informed about the free ART provided by the government.
Dr. Ram Singh focuses on taking the tests and medication meticulously and puts an example of a lady who has been affected by AIDS since last eight years but leading a perfectly normal life by taking regular medications and precautions and is supposed to live further for many more years.
The programme ended successfully after the other members presented their informative nuggets to the asha workers.
